More birds, new mechanics, new ways to play, here's what to buy next.
Wingspan's expansions don't reinvent the game, they expand it in the best possible way. More birds, new mechanics, and new ways to play. The base game supports 1-5 players; by the time you add all the expansions you'll have hundreds of bird cards and modes for 1 through 6. This guide ranks every expansion by value and when to buy it. New to Wingspan? Read the full rules first.
Expansion | 2-5 players
The best Wingspan expansion and the easiest first purchase. European adds 81 new bird cards covering European species, plus new end-of-round goals and bonus cards. It blends seamlessly with the base game and doesn't add any new mechanics, it just makes the card pool richer, more varied, and more replayable. Every Wingspan owner should have this.
Expansion | 1-5 players
Oceania is arguably the most transformative Wingspan expansion. It introduces nectar as a new resource type, redesigns the player mats to be more forgiving and action-efficient, and adds 95 Australian and New Zealand birds. Many groups actually prefer the Oceania player mats for all their games once they have them. A must-buy if you've played Wingspan more than 20 times.
Expansion | 1-6 players (adds 2-player & 6-player modes)
Asia adds 90+ birds from Asia and introduces a brand-new duet mode, a fully redesigned 2-player experience on a shared board. It's the only expansion to change the player count (now supports 6 players), and the duet mode is genuinely excellent. If you primarily play with 2 players or want the 6-player option, this is your expansion.
Storage + content expansion | All player counts
The Nesting Box is Wingspan's deluxe storage solution, it holds the base game plus all current expansions in one box with custom insert trays. It also includes a few new cards and components. If you own multiple expansions and are tired of juggling boxes, this is worth it. Not a gameplay expansion, it's organizational infrastructure.
Expansion | 1-5 players
Africa is the newest Wingspan expansion. It adds 97 new African bird cards and introduces a new action, the 'group hunt' mechanic where predators gain bonus food when multiple birds hunt together. It's well-designed and flavorful, though it adds another layer of complexity. Recommended after you have European and Oceania.
The European Expansion is the best first buy. It adds 81 new bird cards with no new mechanics, just more birds and more variety.
Yes. All Wingspan expansions are fully compatible and can be mixed together. Most groups shuffle all their cards into one deck.
Yes, Oceania includes redesigned player mats that many players prefer to use in all their games, even without the Oceania birds.
As of 2026 there are five expansions: European, Oceania, Asia, Africa, and the Nesting Box (which is primarily a storage solution).
Yes, Wingspan Asia was specifically designed with a dedicated 2-player duet mode that plays on a shared board. It's one of the best 2-player board game experiences available.

Use this decision guide to find the right expansion for your situation:
🕊️ If you're new to Wingspan and want more variety →
Start with the European Expansion. It adds 81 new European birds, introduces pink "when-played" powers (a huge new power type), and adds a new end-of-round goal board. It's the most universally recommended first expansion because it adds the most depth with the least complexity increase.
🌊 If you want the biggest mechanical change →
Get the Oceania Expansion. It introduces Nectar — a new resource that can substitute for food and adds a wildcard-like flexibility. It also includes new player mats with revised habitat actions. Many experienced players consider Oceania the best expansion overall for the way Nectar reshapes strategy.
👫 If you mainly play 2-player →
Get the Asia Expansion. It includes the Duet mode — a dedicated 2-player format on a shared Duet map where both players contribute to a communal habitat. The shared map creates entirely different strategic dynamics compared to the standard competitive game.
🦜 If you already own 2+ expansions →
Consider Africa + Nesting Box. Africa's Aviary habitat (shared between all players) is a fresh twist for experienced players. And if your cards are overflowing storage bins, the Nesting Box organizer is legitimately excellent — it fits all expansions in one box with custom trays.
