Both are the most-recommended gateway games. Here's how they actually differ.
Both games appear on every 'best gateway board games' list. They're both excellent. But they're different in ways that matter depending on your group. Here's an honest comparison.
Ticket to Ride for newer players, younger ages (8+), and groups who want a smoother experience. Catan for groups ready for more drama, trading, and social dynamics (10+). Both are excellent. If in doubt, Ticket to Ride is the safer first pick.

Ticket to Ride is the most consistently recommended gateway game for a reason. Collect colored train car cards, claim routes on the map, complete destination tickets for big bonus points. The rules take 15 minutes to explain. Everyone can see the board, understand what's happening, and feel like they have a plan.
The biggest advantage: it works with 2 players. Catan doesn't really. And Ticket to Ride plays equally well with 2, 3, 4, or 5, the strategy shifts but the game stays good.
Choose Ticket to Ride if: The group is new to modern board games, you have kids age 8-12, you want the most beginner-friendly option, or you sometimes play with just 2 people.
Catan adds a layer of social complexity that Ticket to Ride doesn't have: trading. "I'll give you two wheat for one ore" is a negotiation that can define the whole game. This makes Catan more chaotic, more personal, and often more memorable, but also harder to teach and more dependent on player dynamics.
The random board setup means no two games are alike. Settlement placement at the start creates genuine decision paralysis for new players. And Catan requires 3 players minimum, it doesn't work with 2.
Choose Catan if: The group has played some games before, everyone is age 10+, you want more social interaction and trading, and you reliably have 3-4 players available.
