Never Have I Ever

Say something you've never done. Everyone who HAS done it drinks. A simple game that reveals surprisingly a lot.

πŸ‘₯4+ Players⏱️20-60 minπŸ”žAges 21+

1 Overview

Never Have I Ever is a social game where players reveal things they've never done. People who have done the stated thing drink (or lose a point). It's as much about learning surprising things about friends as it is about the game mechanics.

Works best with 4–12 players. No equipment needed beyond drinks or a way to keep score.

2 Basic Rules

Players sit in a circle. On your turn, say "Never have I ever..." followed by something you have not done. Anyone at the table who HAS done that thing must drink (or put down a finger, depending on the version).

Be honest, the game only works if everyone plays truthfully.

3 Drinking Version

The standard version: if you have done the thing said, take a sip of your drink. Play continues clockwise until someone decides to stop, everyone is ready to stop, or a set number of rounds has been played. No formal end condition, it's a party game.

4 Fingers Version (No Drinks)

Each player holds up 10 fingers. When a statement applies to you, put one finger down. The first player to put all fingers down "loses" (or wins, depending on your group's framing). This version works without alcohol and has a clear endpoint.

5 Strategy & Social Dynamics

Never Have I Ever is as strategic as you make it:

  • Target specific people, if you know a friend has done something embarrassing, craft a statement that only catches them
  • Broad vs. narrow, broad statements ("Never have I ever been to Europe") catch more people; narrow statements ("Never have I ever gotten a speeding ticket in a rental car in Italy") are more pointed
  • Use it to learn, not just expose, the best rounds come from genuine curiosity, not trying to embarrass people. "Never have I ever had a secret hobby" works better than "Never have I ever done something illegal"
  • The "also me" moment, when the statement-maker is the only one who hasn't done the thing, everyone else drinks and they sit awkwardly. This is usually funnier than the reverse

6 Variants

  • Hot seat, one player is asked "Never have I ever" questions by the group for 3 minutes, then the seat passes
  • Card game version, commercial Never Have I Ever card decks provide pre-written statements ranging from mild to spicy, removing the need for players to think of their own
  • Category rounds, restrict statements to a theme: "travel," "embarrassing moments," "childhood," "work." Focused rounds often generate better conversation
