Bounce the coin. Make your shot. Give the drink.

1 Overview

Quarters is a classic American drinking game where players take turns bouncing a quarter off a table into a cup. It's simple, requires no special equipment, and scales to any group size. Always play responsibly — know your limits.

🔞 For players of legal drinking age only.

2 Setup

You need: a quarter (or similar coin), a large cup, and drinks for everyone. Fill the center cup about halfway with beer. Players sit around a table with their own drinks nearby. Decide who goes first.

3 Gameplay

On your turn, bounce the quarter off the table and try to land it in the cup. You must bounce — you cannot drop or toss the coin directly in.

  • Miss: Pass the quarter to the next player.
  • Make it: Choose any player to drink. You get to shoot again.
  • Three in a row: If you make three consecutive shots, you can make a rule (see below).

4 Making Rules

When a player makes three shots in a row, they can create a permanent rule for the game. Common rules: "no saying the word 'drink'", "left hand only", "point with your elbow not your finger." Anyone who breaks a rule drinks.

5 Speed Quarters

A faster, more chaotic variant. Two cups and two quarters start at opposite sides of the table. Players on those sides bounce simultaneously. The goal: make your quarter into your cup before the person to your right makes theirs. If you make it first, pass your cup to the right — that player must drink, then restart bouncing. If both make it simultaneously, restart.

6 Popular Variants

  • Bounce and decide: Before shooting, the current player says "social" (everyone drinks) or names a target. Only valid if they make the shot.
  • Stack: If someone makes it in while you're drinking, you have to drink again.
  • Reverse: If you make it in on your first try, direction of play reverses.
